Monthly Prayer Letter | Jun 2025

Dear Companions,

Recently, a Hong Kong film titled Valley of the Shadow of Death has prompted us to reflect deeply on the profound impact of sin on human nature. As believers, even pastors, the longer we have been followers of Christ and the more experienced we become, it does not mean that we possess extraordinary spiritual abilities to "appropriately" navigate life's trials. Especially when the wounds caused by sin are personal, such as the loss of a loved one, human rationality no matter how sound, cannot dispel the shadows of grief within. While the film's plot may feel distant from real life, we, too, may unknowingly find ourselves walking through the "valley of the shadow of death". In the face of various losses (including broken relationships), we may realize that our usual problem-solving skills are of little use. Yet, God’s rod and staff remain faithful and ever-present, ensuring we do not walk alone in the long journey and allowing us to glimpse the light of hope.

Apart from a busy schedule of ministry commitments, I have recently been engaging in heartfelt conversations with different people, including young graduates struggling to find their path, old friends preparing to leave Hong Kong for new chapters in life, and young people who are currently in prison, with whom I am preparing to exchange letters. Unexpected changes or losses, which can leave us feeling lost, questioning our worth and motivation. Faced with an uncertain future, our hearts may be filled with anxiety. Where, then, do our strength and help come from? Augustine once said, God is closer to me than I am to myself. We discover God’s will in the deepest longings of our hearts towards life, where we begin to learn how to truly live in love. Our ability to love and live authentically is rooted in the Lord’s boundless mercy toward us.

We give thanks for the successful completion of the Encountering the Word Retreat Day Camp, jointly organized by FES and the Christian Spiritual Direction and Resource Center. Nearly 40 youth pastors attended, some I already knew, others I met for the first time. Many were deeply moved and encouraged by this gathering specially designed for those serving young people. Through Bible study, life-sharing, and mutual pastoral care, they reflected on the mission entrusted to them. The retreat also provided space for personal quiet prayer, discerning God’s presence and engaging in intimate dialogue with Him to understand His heart. What truly binds people together is the love of God. If we attempt to build relationships based on status, position, or power, it ultimately becomes a form of control rather than a means to fulfill what is lacking in others. May all pastors remain ever mindful of God’s grace, not allowing external pressures to lead them into self-doubt or denial

Our FES team is currently preparing for two July events: the Joint-Schools Discipleship Camp for secondary students (Form 3 to Form 5) and the Youth Bible Conference for form six students and university believers. We warmly encourage you to invite the young people you know to join these thoughtfully planned gatherings. May participants experience the richness of faith through open sharing and prayer, that is indeed a precious opportunity for growth.

FES’s fiscal year will conclude at the end of June. Looking back, we see how God has provided for us in His own ways, ensuring we lack nothing. May the God of all grace bless the work of our hands throughout the year, allowing us to witness His abundance and bear the fruit of righteousness for His kingdom (Philippians 1:11). If you would like to respond, we invite you to make a love offering by the end of this month, strengthening us spiritually to fulfill the Lord’s commission.

May the Lord’s mercy and grace be with you always.

Your brother in Christ,

Barry Cheung
