Annual Appeal 2023

Dear companions of FES,

In the beginning of this year, the FES team celebrates its journey with a grateful heart, not only because of the successful completion of the 65th anniversary thanksgiving event, but also because we have witnessed God calling generations of co-workers to serve the young people of Hong Kong in this great age and raising up generations of students to take up the mission of campus evangelism. Despite the impact and challenges of the pandemic (especially the interpersonal barriers), our staff has continued to serve with dedication, whether it is developing social media ministries or experimenting and adjusting their approach to meet the real needs of the youth. Like the apostle Paul (1 Cor. 9:17-18), the reward we receive is priceless: to see young lives encouraged and finding their way in the Lord. Please listen to the following response from a student:

“What is the best way to spend a summer vacation for university students? In the summer of 2022, I participated in a student ministry and media ministry internship program organized by FES Inter-college Department. It was an unforgettable experience that opened another door in my faith. Our internship was mainly about experiencing media work. Through different ways, the staff gave us a deeper understanding of what "media" is, such as inviting media people to share, visiting exhibitions, reading articles, etc., which made us understand better when we were in practice! In addition, the internship also emphasized our spiritual growth, with theological integration, Bible study, spiritual formation, etc., so that we could participate in the internship from a more holistic perspective!”

In the 65th anniversary thanksgiving service, I shared the direction of ministry development for the next five years, insisting on walking with students to build a mission community that values Bible study and cares for spirituality. As the Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek advocated, we do not execute a planned rational design in advance, but rather shape the outcome in a process of spontaneous human interaction. The future may not unfold the way we expect it to, but in freedom we can learn to expect to have the opportunity to achieve our goals. Therefore, I invite you to keep your hope for the future and together we will write a new page for the student evangelical movement in Hong Kong.

Frankly, we need more companions to create a future that is unknowable but assured in the Lord. Over the past half year, FES has seen a steady decline in the number and amount of donations, resulting in a shortfall of over HK$650,000 for the year. We hope you will prayerfully consider becoming a regular donor to FES and encourage you to share our "Walking Together Against the Current" five-year ministry plan with others around you, inviting more friends to join the FES support network.

We are busy preparing for our annual meeting and FES Day seminar in late March, where several guests and students will share the topic "Any Space for Practice of Faith?” Amid all the limitations and dilemmas, we learn from the epistle of Paul, convinced that for God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our heart, and that we have this treasure in jars of clay, so that our lives may reflect the glory of Christ. "Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose…" (2 Cor. 5:5).

Your brother,

Barry Cheung
