15th November 2021
Dear Companions of FES,
Peace be with you in the Lord!
As we enter November, all the large shopping malls are ready with a wide range of Christmas decorations. Compared to last year, this second Christmas in the midst of the pandemic is surrounded by the usual festive atmosphere and everyone seems to be adjusting to the rhythm of life under the new normal. At this time of year when travel is not yet resumed, it is hoped that the power of local consumption will benefit all sectors of society and that each of us may share in the joy and peace that is brought by the coming of Jesus Christ. Although it is still a “masked Christmas”, hope that masks will not stop us from sharing the seasonal joys with each other, and more importantly, they will not hide the faces around us who need our attention. The lyrics of the song “Over the Tide” come to my mind, “Who can see the truth of your life and mine? Who can discern the trauma in a smile? Let truth and kindness be my guide for life, turning the gloomy hearts into shining lights!” May we keep aware of and care for those who are hurting in our city as we celebrate.
Many universities and secondary schools have gradually resumed full-time face-to-face learning on campus, returning to ‘normal’ mode of operation. However, after two years of “abnormal” study and social dispersion, young people indeed need to put in extra effort to adapt to the “normal” rhythm of life while catching up with the lagging progress. The incidents of children suicides since the beginning of this school year have not only saddened us, but also reminded us to think about the well-being of young people at present.
FES has always been committed to the call to walk with students, and during these days the staff continue to take every opportunity to go into the situations of the young people, to face their struggles and confusion with them, and to experience the power of faith together. Over the past two years, through the listening campaign, the staff have been able to engage with the students to prepare their emotions and spirituality enabling them to share their hearts and voices with each other during difficult times.
With an uncertain future, FES is under greater financial pressure and staff salaries have been frozen for the second year in a row due to the economic situation. Please keep us in your prayer. In keeping with your intersession and prayer, we also encourage you to take part in student evangelism through financial giving. Besides the overheads, FES has a long good tradition of giving Christmas gifts to our staff. Every year, FES appeals to our supporters to send a Christmas offering to the co-workers as a token of appreciation and recognition. With grateful hearts, may we give them a small gift to express our gratitude and acknowledge their faithfulness and dedication in the past year.
“By powers of good so wondrously protected, we wait with confidence, befall what may. God is with us at night and in the morning and oh, most certainly on each new day.” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
