Dear Companions of FES,
Peace in the Lord!
The past year has been a year of unprecedented upheaval for all of us. From the protests against the extradition bill in last year, to the changes in the entire political arena following the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong in recent months, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept the world since the beginning of this year, the rhythm of our lives has been completely disrupted. All socio-economic activities, as well as the church life of believers, have been affected to an extensive degree. At the same time, however, we also witness the power of internet at its most timely, with schools extending their lessons into home through video communication software and church services moving from physical to online. No matter what, we have all entered, or been entered, into a ‘new normal’. Everything has changed more than we could have imagined.
The combination of the social movement and the pandemic has made the situation for young people different from what it used to be. “There is no going back” has become many people’s summary of the present reality. While behind these words there may be sighs and regrets, a sense of hope is also carried with for the path ahead to be explored and imagined. FES as being an organisation to walk with the students, our co-workers seized every opportunity to step into the scenes during the difficult and heavy days of the past, to face the struggles and confusion with the young people, to experience the power of faith, and to reflect together on our mission and commitment for the present.
FES has modified our operation of ministries due to the pandemic outbreak for most of this year, with a number of online small group Bible studies, and the quadrennial Mission Conference moving to an online mobile format. The theme of this year’s conference, “Disciples’ Road to the End”, reflected the real experiences of these students committee. The FES co-workers are able to give them not ‘answers’, but more listening and walking together, listening to the Word of God and understanding His calling at the present time.
In times of uncertainty and a worsening economy, FES is under greater financial pressure and we ask you to keep us in prayers. In keeping with your watch and prayer, we also encourage you to take part in student evangelism through financial giving. Besides the overheads, FES has a long tradition of giving Christmas gifts to our co-workers. Every year, FES appeals to our supporters to send a Christmas offering to the co-workers as a token of appreciation and recognition. We hope that we may give them a small gift to express our gratitude and acknowledge their faithfulness and dedication in the past year.
Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord… His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.” (Luke 1:46, 50, 51) May we all glorify the Lord! Emmanuel!
