Monthly Prayer Letter (Jan 2023)

Dear Companions of FES,

In the year 2023, even though Hong Kong has finally entered “recovery” from various measures of pandemic control, it seems that the mental health of Hong Kong people would no longer be the normal state. Many young people are suffering from emotional disorders, and the incidence of suicides among schoolchildren is very serious. In response, we continue to promote a culture of listening in the churches through the Listening Campaign, which seeks to respond to situational needs. Last year, we also organized 9 “Mental Health First Aid (Caring for Youth Edition) Certificate Courses”, serving a total of about 180 people, to enhance believers’ understanding of mental health and their ability to help the affected individuals, so that the participants could be loving and knowledgeable when serving the youth. Some of the courses were organized in cooperation with university pastorates and churches, so that university students (including non-believers) could be benefited.

In addition, we organized the first “Listening Card Train-the-Trainer” program at the end of last year to share the team’s experience in promoting a listening culture in campuses and churches over the past few years, the reflective integration of the concepts, and the feasible models. On the past Monday, we also collaborated with Mr. Alan Chan, a clinical psychologist, to organize a trauma healing workshop, “Spare a day without any harm to your fight”, in order to support pastors, social workers and counselors who have been busy in taking care of those who are suffering from spiritual injuries in the past few years. We intend to keep organizing the above courses this year. Please pray for this ministry. If you are interested in co-organizing, please contact us.

Besides, we are in the process of updating our basic Bible study training approach by introducing the “three worlds of Bible study” – the “crossing over” activity of understanding the Bible as the world of the text, the world after the text, and the world of the parallel readers – as the basic framework for Bible study. We anticipate publishing the above training materials as the first book in a new Bible Engagement Series. The same series is also planned to include my own book on the study of Biblical Trauma Literature. Please pray for this ministry.

Lastly, in view of the substantial turnover of young people in the churches in recent years, we are now conducting a “Survey on the Faith Conditions of College Believers in Hong Kong”, in the hope of reflecting the faith conditions of young believers in the colleges and universities. The survey has entered the data analysis stage. We plan to release the results during FES Day on March 24th, and all youth workers are welcome to attend for exchanging ideas. Please pray for this research. If you have a commitment to research in youth ministry, either in terms of tangible donations or in terms of analyzing data, please contact me to learn more. Please pray for this ministry as well.

Your brother,

Fox Lo
Associate General Secretary
