Monthly Prayer Letter (December 2022)

20th December 2022

Dear companions of FES,

May we prepare ourselves for the Advent season and anticipate the coming of the Savior! We believe that the power of darkness will eventually be dispersed and that the Savior, through the presence of the Church, will show the world the true ruler of history with the work of the new heavens and earth already having begun today. From the third week of Advent, the waiting and longing has turned into a joyful experience; as we become more aware of the coming of the Lord to conquer the kingdom of darkness, we will gradually realize that this is a joyous event. The apostle Paul said, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil. 4:4) What brings us joy? Do we depend on the external things for having joy? Paul reminded us that we rejoice in the presence of the Lord. When we realize the goodness of the Lord and share it with those around us, providing for their needs, we will be satisfied with joy.

Therefore, true joy is not about external changes, material pleasures, or the response of others, but about being connected to the Lord in our lives, walking in the path of our calling, and bringing blessings and encouragement to those we meet. Many say that it is challenging to work with young people in this time, and the changes in the external environment are unprecedented. Could we still rejoice in our ministry? Is it worth continuing? Undoubtfully, as we witness the same great thirst for faith among the younger generation, our FES team keeps moving forward step by step despite the adverse currents, continuing to explore the ministry where we can, and serving the precious life entrusted to us by the Lord. If you are moved to walk with us, please support the five year ministry project “Walking Together Against the Current” and experience the joy in the Lord together.

Please pray for the two events to be held at the end of December. Pray that the Lord would bless the final preparations for the joint school Bible Camp, and give wisdom and power to the staff and student leaders to assist more than 50 participants to rest their hearts and find vision and direction for their lives in the Word of the Lord. We are also thankful for the participation of more than 30 fellowship committee members in the Joint Secondary School Fellowship. Our staff members are also enthusiastically implementing the follow-up Bible study meetings, hoping that the students will realize the importance of group Bible study and make some sacred space to meet the Lord in their busy study life.

As 2022 draws to a close, have you thought of things to give thanks to the Lord for? During these years, I believe we have all realized that there is nothing to boast about in terms of personal achievements due to the limitations imposed from outside or by ourselves. If one experiences growth in life despite the limitations, or inspires others to grow, it is something to be very grateful for. I am most thankful for the trust and solidarity of our team, which has allowed each of us to grow in our ministry and enjoy the fruits of our hard work together. With a sad heart, I would like to say farewell to Mesona Chan and Monica Leung, who will be leaving at the end of December. The team has been greatly blessed by the dedication of these two senior teammates in the past. We trust that the Lord will guide them with grace in their future journey.

Elizabeth said to Mary, “Blessed is she who has believed” (Lk. 1:45). Those who believe know that what they await will not fail. May you experience the presence of the Lord during Advent and Christmas.

Your brother,
Barry Cheung
