Christmas Gift Appeal 2022

21st November 2022

Dear Companions of FES,

Peace be with you in the Lord!

In thanksgiving to the Father’s guidance, FES has shared 65 years with the Hong Kong community. On November 13, more than 100 brothers and sisters gathered at Concordia Middle School to give thanks and praise to the Lord for His ongoing guidance and care in the student evangelistic movement. Looking back at the 60th anniversary thanksgiving service five years ago, Rev LO Lung-kwong gave an encouraging reminder with the title “What should I compare this generation with?” At that time, who could have imagined the changes that the “generation” would undergo during the last five years, when the society, the campus, and the church had become completely different?

We are grateful that in this changing environment, FES is still holding on to our vision, equipping young believers with intellectual thinking about their faith and fulfilling the integral mission, while at the same time entering the situations of young people, facing struggles and confusion together with them, and experiencing growth. We appreciate the FES staff’s dedication to their duties in the past, especially during the difficult times for students.

In the 65th anniversary thanksgiving service, Dr. Simon Cheung used the book of Hebrews to encourage the FES community to stand against the current and count the days of the past, yet not to lose our fearless hearts. From the early church to every generation of believers, all have experienced the challenges of difficult circumstances. Turning to “In Those Years: Youth Revival and Early Evangelical Student Movement”, written by the first FES Executive Director, Rev. Chan Hay Him, the beginning of the evangelical student movement in Hong Kong was also marked by many obstacles. Reflecting on the past, the revival of the Baptist Youth Union and the life stories of the “St. Paul’s Seven” remind us how to face the challenges of our time with perseverance. FES aims to continue to walk with young people against the current ahead. In the next five years, we seek to help students build a life centered on the Word, an integral spiritual nurturing and communal life, and a sharp and timely reflection on faith and practice of mission.

With an uncertain future, FES is under even more financial pressure. We still have about HK$3 million in outstanding bank property loans and would appreciate your prayers for us. In addition to prayers, we need more regular donors to support us in our mission to serve the younger generation. Besides the operating expenses, FES has a good tradition of giving Christmas gifts to our staff members. Every year, FES will appeal for donations of Christmas gifts to our staff members as a token of recognition. With gratitude, I hope we can give our staff a small token of our appreciation for their dedication and hard work in the past.

“Cast not away therefore your boldness, which hath great recompense of reward.” (Heb 10:35 ASV)

Yours sincerely,
Kwok-wai CHEUNG
Chairman of the Board of Directors of FES 2022-23

The Appeal of Joint College Bible Study Camp

In a generation of exile, we firmly believe that only the Word of God can give us assurance. Barely surviving on the verge of death, struggling with uncertainty, and feeling powerless, is precisely the situation of our city now. We desire to walk with our students to seek the determination to persevere and the motivation to move forward, and to help them live out their God-given calling in this time of uncertainty, whether to stay or leave.

This year, the Inter-college Team will continue to organize a joint school Bible study camp which will be held from 28/12 to 31/12/2022 at The Salvation Army’s Bradbury Camp in Cheung Chau, with the theme of “Lingering│Staying or Leaving – Finding the Courage to be Present”. In addition to Bible studies, the camp also offers different types of workshops, including spiritual guidance through art therapy and the spirituality of faith in literature, guiding students to sort out their own history and the history of the times, and to envision their future destiny. We understand that not only the college students, but also us, the entire people of this age of uncertainty, are figuring out the choice of staying or leaving. Let’s pray for each other, and please especially pray for the students who are planning to attend the camp, that they will encounter the Lord in the space He has created for them.

Due to the pandemic in the past few years, the camp fees have been raised significantly. We do not want to discourage the students by charging a higher fee, thus we decide to set the camp fee at our loss (if there are more than 50 participants, each student will be subsidized HK$200 and the total subsidy will be more than HK$10,000). We sincerely invite you to walk with the students, keeping us in prayer as we try to find their voices in an age of silence, prayerfully committing to our ministry, and financially supporting us. May the Lord use the camp to fulfill His purpose, and we look forward to continuing to share our vision with every one of you.
