Monthly Prayer Letter (Dec 2023)

Dear companions of FES,

I hope you enjoy a peaceful and loving Christmas. Apart from celebrating the birth of our Savior at Christmas, I also meditate on the life of the baby Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the newborn baby Jesus went from the “holy scene” into “exile” to escape from King Herod. Herod was so determined that this king of the Jews would not survive that he killed all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under (Mt. 2:16-18). After Herod’s death and the succession of his son to rule Judea, Joseph, still afraid to go there again, moved his family back to Galilee and settled in the city of Nazareth, where Jesus became known as “the Nazarene” (Mt. 2:23).

The Son of God became a man who, in the dark ages, experienced life’s most vulnerable and incapable infant stage, willingly falling into a situation where he could not protect himself and had to wait for the dark ages to pass before regaining his freedom to live (Mt. 2:20). Let us meditate on the Son who went through the most passive and inactive period of His life, and who is still the One who reigns over all and saves the world. Let us see hope through this baby, let us see His presence and comfort in the midst of despair, in the barred windows, where He is already in the presence of the helpless waiting in the darkness and in their needs. The justice of the Lord never forsakes those who are oppressed.

After Christmas, our staff continued to be busy with frontline work. Our Inter-School Team grasped the space of students’ holiday and organized a Joint School fellowship committee members BBQ with representatives from more than 10 schools. There was time to get to know each other and time to learn from the game to rely on God every day. Please pray for the upcoming Joint Colleges Bible Camp, which has already filled its over sixty camp spaces. Through the study of 1 John, we will embrace the promise and command to live out our love without fear in the life of the fellowship, and realize the true depths of understanding and reassurance in the community that we are not alone in our journey.

In addition, the Christian Association of the University of Hong Kong (HKUCA) is finalizing its preparations for the celebration of the 70th Anniversary. Besides the Thanksgiving Service and Dinner on January 27, they will soon publish “Faith Conversations with ‘Troubled’ College Students, a book that chronicles graduates from different generations responding to the faith struggles of today’s students, and initiating sincere conversations with each other in the context of the student evangelical movement, which is indispensable to the study of youth pastoral care today. The overall budget for the HKUCA’s 70th Anniversary is over HK$80,000. If you are prompted to respond to God’s work at HKU, please indicate your support for “Project CA70” in your donation.

Finally, I would like to share with you that FES is now preparing a “Survey on the Faith Conditions of College Believers”, hoping to collect responses from 500 students, including those who participate in traditional churches, college fellowships, or those who do not participate in any regular faith groups, so as to faithfully reflect the state of their faith. We plan to announce the results at the FES Day on March 24th. We would like to thank Dr. Chi Chiu Harry HUI and Mr. Nelson Leung, for their valuable advice, and several students and graduates for volunteering their time to help. If you have a commitment to research on youth pastoral care, either in terms of substantive donations or data analysis, please contact me to discuss.

Wishing you all a New Year of renewed experiences, continuing to rely on the great gift of the Incarnation of the Son, and not forgetting those who are going through great trials and tribulations in various places.

Your brother,

Barry Cheung
General Secretary
