Monthly Prayer Letter (October 2022)

26th October 2022

Dear Companions of FES,

How is your day going? Are you feeling tired? To seek a way out, we often need to be determined and get ready to turn a new page tomorrow. We should make a new start anyway, once again return to the Word, take hold of the Lord’s commission to walk with the weak and be encouraged and strengthened in Him.

I recently shared with a graduate who mentioned that all walks of life are now living in a state of distress, unable to express honestly one’ s feelings and thoughts. It is necessary to allow our emotions, thoughts and actions to ”come out frankly” in order to live with integrity. Our hearts and minds are not tangible pieces, but a depth or quality of life experience. We therefore need to take care of our own hearts and minds and have companions who honor our hearts and minds, and together we can patiently enter a ‘desert journey’, learning to let go of things that are beyond our control, and then discover the meaning of renewal and the purpose of carrying on.

In the days of the captivity, the Prophet Isaiah received a message of comfort, proclaiming that those who mourned for Zion would experience the planting of the Lord and become the oaks of righteousness, “and provide for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” (Isa 61:3) The work of planting, though not easily visible, has a fruitful effect, providing nourishment for the weary soul. Where does our hope come from? From the power of the world at one time? Or from the Lord who rules the history of the world?

During these academic years, schooling is often interrupted. However, many young people are willing to pursue their faith and come to the staff with many questions, hoping to receive some guidance and help. Our Inter-school Department organized a Inter-School Fellowship Committee Orientation in early October, in which 150 secondary school students took part, willing to serve the spiritual needs of their peers in the school campus. May they engage in the community life of the campus and equip themselves well to respond to the mission to which God has called them.

Time flies and the FES has been around for 65 years. It is by the grace of the Lord that we have been able to grow in faith with generations of young people throughout this history of ups and downs. We will be holding our 65th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service on 13 November in the afternoon. We look forward to meeting you there to count the blessings of the Lord and nurture the future together.

In the meantime, we are promoting the five-year ministry project “Walking Together Against the Current”, in the hope that by the time we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we will see participants from different generations continue to form Bible study communities, live out the steady rhythm of faith and recognize their calling in these times. In this regard, you are cordially invited to participate in supporting the FES plans and developments for the next five years and witness together the amazing work of God in the youth community. In facing a bleak future, please “do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.” (Heb. 10:35)

It is my deepest hope that everyone who serves the Lord will continue to walk by faith, be faithful to what has been entrusted to you, live freely for the truth, and let the Lord’s call be a place of refuge for our souls.

Best wishes for seeing the Lord’s presence in your life.

Your brother,
Barry Cheung
General Secretary
