Monthly Prayer Letter (Jan 2025)

Dear companions of FES,

This week we held our annual Staff Retreat Day and Ministry Planning Camp at Breakthrough Youth Village. Led by William, Associate Director of the Fellowship Department on the first day, all staff members put together a personal “ministry journey”, meditated on the story of Jesus’ call to Peter, and reflected on how the Lord is gradually leading us. The following day, we invited Rev Timothy Au to lead a retreat for our staff team to practice listening to each other and reflecting on our roles, gifts, and mission in the organization. On the third morning, we shared our plans and needs for the new year in each department and prayed for each other. When we left the camp, we went shopping for “souvenirs” which were Breakthrough’s latest publications Why Can’t We Become the Ideal Adult? A Report on the Face of Youth in Hong Kong + Breakazine (Unfinished Adult Ceremony), which summarize the results of its youth researches for more than a decade. With the significant attrition of young people in Hong Kong churches nowadays, we need more solid local researches to help us understand the youth situation in a more  well-rounded way.

In recent years we started to promote listening movement, organize non-violent communication training, and mental health first aid courses. This month, our Inter-College Department collaborated with Virtue Wisdom Link Books to organize “Youth Mental Health Challenge: The Lord’s Perspective”, book sharing session of “Blessed are the Poor in Spirit”. Timothy, a young author who served as a summer intern at FES, shared his heartfelt journey of facing mental health challenges and his reflective collation of his psychological profession with theology and spiritualism at the event. We are thankful for the highly positive response to the gathering.

A final ministry highlight I would like to share is trauma informed/trauma sensitive pastoral care. Over the years, the Lord has led me into the study of trauma theory in the face of the trauma experienced by students, graduates, and family members. In addition to using listening cards, promoting the listening movement, and organizing trauma healing courses such as Wounded Healer, our co-workers have also formed a study group with several brothers and sisters who are engaged in psychology education, counselling and therapy, to study relevant biblical, theological, and pastoral books and articles, and to share each other’s discoveries in theory and practice, which has been very rewarding. We would like to invite you to join us at this year’s FES Day “Pastoral Care Seminar – A Primer on Trauma-Informed Pastoral Care” to explore one of the much-needed pastoral care pathways in our church today.

Wish you all a new year soaring on wings like eagles, and being as shrewd as snakes.

Your companion,

Fox Lo
Associate General Secretary
