25th January 2021
Dear companions of FES,
I have heard Professor Lin Hong-hsin recently say that 20s of each century is the “most influential and brilliant period”, equivalent to the youthful years in life. The 20s of last century, known as the “Golden Decade of Philosophy”, was marked by the emergence of a number of philosophical and theological masters of European cultural thought who provided the blueprint for shaping the future of a world in crisis. As we are living at the beginning of 2021 today, especially in Hong Kong — hub of the world, how should we welcome this decade?
Between reality and ideal, there is an interweaving of pessimistic and optimistic imagery. As Wittgenstein said, one must transcend these propositions before one can see the world aright. The Gospel of John records the heartfelt confession of Martha, who had seen her loved one walk through life and death, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world” (John 11:27). The Lord who has come into the world determines the ultimate destiny of the world. The occurrences in the world cannot be self-explanatory, but must be examined before the Lord’s judgment seat and bring renewal and new opportunities. Rev Timothy AU reminded us at our staff retreat of two images from Psalm 29; firstly, the majestic voice of the Lord over the waters; and secondly, the Lord sits enthroned over the flood. In the midst of this noisy world of power, the Lord, who is transcendent yet present, gives us strength and peace (Ps. 29:11) and opens the way to glory.
As we look ahead to a year of uncertainty, FES affirms our calling to serve the younger generation. At our recent ministry planning meeting, we revisited the vision of integral mission and identified holistic care for each life’s unique situation as an important strategy. FES also values the lives of our staffs. We build fellowship with one another to listen to the Word, thereby we could gather and nurture students and graduates into a community of disciples who listen to the Word. This year, even though worries and fears are still real, may we all remain unencumbered and continue to walk in the strength of goodness and be a blessing to others.
Please pray for the Inter-School Team as they have been working hard to prepare the online version of the “Live with the Spirit 2021” devotional materials, which will be released in September for the new school year. We aim to encourage secondary school students to build a stable devotion life and experience the Word of God in real-life situations. The total cost of the project for the whole year is about HKD65,000, including design and writing costs. Please pray for the timely completion of this ministry and consider taking part in it with an offering. We are also organizing FES Day 2021 on 21 March with the theme of ‘Guarding this Generation’. Through it we will reflect on the relationship between life education and the mission of the Gospel with fellow educators. May the Lord bless all the arrangements.
Please join us in discerning the Lord’s will in this time, both in terms of the direction of our lives and the development of the FES ministry. FES team will share with you if there are concrete proposals for the paths we should choose, whether it be the transformation of our literature ministry or the development of our media ministry. As earthly sojourners, may we all meditate on the Lord’s guidance in each step of our journey.
