Dear companions of FES,
According to a recent universities’ research report, the “life-worth-living index” of young people in Hong Kong has dropped to a record low over the years, and it is found that the higher the grade of the pupils, the lower the recognition of “life worth living” is. The life-worth-living index reflects students’ evaluation of their lives as meaningful and purposeful. Apart from family and academic pressures, peer relationships are also a major challenge, making it difficult for them to establish a sense of direction and fulfilment beyond their academic achievements, and they feel no sense of satisfaction or happiness in their daily lives. It is heartbreaking to see this growing situation of young people, and I can’t help but ask: does our faith give them a sense of meaning and value in their lives? Jesus said, “I have come that the sheep may have life and have it to the full.” (Jn 10:10). May every fellow worker who serves faithfully in the Lord, guide the youth to a broader horizon of seeing their own lives and God’s created world full of colors.
This year’s Inter-School Orientation (ISO) for fellowship committee members organized by our Inter-school Department was successfully accomplished. We are thankful that a total of 250 students and teachers signed up for the event. I participated in the Community Exploration and Bible Study Training Workshops and the participants were very engaged and eager to learn more about their faith and equip themselves for serving. May each student bring with them a wonderful experience, encountering the immense goodness of the Lord on campus, rejoicing from the bottom of their hearts, and experiencing the growth of life with the support of their teachers and classmates who serve with them.
With the effort and hard work of our Literature Department, two new books, ‘Bible Reading is a Journey of Traversing’ and ‘Urban Spirituality’, were published in October and introduced to the church for the first time at the United Christian Book Fair. The former is the first in our new publication series, Bible Engagement, written by Fox Lo, our Associate General Secretary, to inspire readers to read the Bible and themselves in a three-dimensional way, and to bless the church with a renewed culture of reading the Bible. Reading the Bible is ultimately listening to the Word, the Lord’s personal call to every being in the world, inviting each person to return to Him.
Our Inter-college Department is also preparing for the Bible Camp at the end of December, with the theme “Undirected Tour”, in which we are looking forward to exploring life’s journeys with a group of tertiary students who are full of unknowns. Indeed, each of us is on a journey, and we must always have an open heart to discover God who walks with us on our journey. Please feel free to recommend this meaningful camp to anyone you know.
While the challenges posed by the wider society have not reduced, God’s vision for us is nevertheless growing stronger with each passing day. Every time when our fellow workers meet, whether it’s a formal meeting or just a casual chat, we feel God’s guidance in keeping His ministry going and bearing fruit. As we endeavor to respond to the Lord’s commission, please join in prayer to remember the still heavy pressure on FES finances. The shortfall in recurrent expenditure for this financial year has reached more than HKD700,000 since July. However, as we trust in the Father with one heart and seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, He will give us abundant favor in due time and accomplish great things in our midst.
Your brother,
Barry Cheung
General Secretary
