Dear companions of FES,
I recently had a valuable opportunity to attend a course on psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, and the instructor mentioned that some clients would engage in abnormal behaviors, such as hurting themselves physically, in order to find a way out of their unbearable situation. The first step to support them is to actively listen to their life stories and understand their underlying thoughts and purposes. Mentors need to be patient in caring for the struggles of young people as they grow up, so that they have the space to express their emotions and feel valued in order to build a worthy life for themselves. I am reminded of the female lead in the movie The Lyricist Wannabe, who, instead of pursuing an accelerated career path after graduation, chose to follow a path full of setbacks in pursuit of her dreams. If you encountered such a young person, would you support her to step out bravely?
When God sent Samuel to choose the king of Israel from among the sons of Jesse, God was not looking at the outward appearance of a man’s physical features or behavior, but at the heart of the man (I Sam. 16:7). When the young David was confronted with Goliath’s insults, he responded thus, “It is not by the sword or spear that the LORD saves, for the battle is the Lord’s ……” (I Sam. 17:47). While neither David’s family nor his enemies thought he was capable of going into battle, he knew “at heart” that God would defeat the enemy for Israel, so that he responded positively and walked in the path that God had chosen for his life.
As summer is approaching, FES Inter-school and Inter-college Department staff are busy preparing for the summer ministries, including DSE Discipleship Program and Integral Mission Summer Internship Program. May the Lord lead suitable Form 6 and tertiary students, through the summer ministry to equip their faith, build up a community of disciples, and respond to the mission. We are thankful that the FES Day “Survey on the Faith Conditions of College Believers in Hong Kong” was successfully held, with more than a hundred churches attending the conference. We hope that this will encourage pastors and teachers to sincerely walk with the young people, and to listen to their real needs. We will organize a Youth Ministry Forum on June 10th as a follow-up response, which will include a seminar on review of the ecclesiastical concept, sharing on the qualitative research of the survey on the faith status of college believers, and an experiential practice workshop. We welcome pastors, deacons, youth mentors and group leaders to join us in this seminar. We welcome pastors, elders, youth mentors and group leaders to join us.
In recent years, FES has seen young staff joining the team every summer, bringing new ideas and strength to us. The FES Board of Directors has just approved the setting up of a Staff Development Fund to allocate more resources for staff to receive systematic theological education and other trainings, enabling our staff to be more effective and promoting the stable development of the team as a whole. The first phase of the ” Staff Development Fund” has a fundraising target of HK$200,000. If you are inspired to make a donation to support the ongoing training of FES staff team, please indicate the amount in your response. By growing as a fellow worker, we will have the knowledge and empathy to understand the inner world of young people, and to work with them to discover the truth and meaning of the suffering and joy of life.
May the power to grow remain in your life!
Your brother,
Barry Cheung
General Secretary
