Dear companions of FES,
After six years of hard work, students had finally come to the day when the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (DSE) results were released. As always, the media loved to interview and report on the DSE champions. The difference is that this year, the number of straight-5**-students (regarded as valedictorian) has dropped dramatically. We are grateful for the alternative media coverage: stories of accompanying students on the release of the examination results; interviews with repeaters who had thought of giving up, but eventually persevered to finish. Some of the students mentioned that they might eventually have to give up pursuing further studies due to financial problems, even though he/she had scored good grades. No matter whether he is pursuing further education or employment, his hope of becoming a “calm, practical and responsible person” (cf. “The Voice” Instagram) is already worthy of applause.
Speaking of “responsible” living, the recently departed and much respected Rev. Yuen Tin Yau not only lived a life of responsibility for himself, but we can see from the many memories of him that he was committed to Hong Kong, to those he had pastored, and even to those he simply met, and was always willing to care for the lives of others. We are sad to see Rev. Yuan go. May he be spared from the labor of the world and the suffering of cancer, and rest in the Lord’s arms; and may the Lord give his family peace and comfort.
With the completion of the DSE program and the closing of various camps for secondary and tertiary students in the coming weeks, including our Youth Bible Conference “Is There Something Wrong with Seeking to Live Out Mission on Campus?” for F.5 to university students from July 31 to August 1, this year’s summer ministry has come to an end. We are also thankful that we have theological student interns participating in the summer ministry for teachers this year, which allowed us to resume the annual Teachers’ Retreat Day in July with limited staffing resources, and to organize different workshops before and after the summer, as well as to restart the long-quiet “Teachers’ Reflection” to share and reflect with the teachers on Facebook and Instagram. (Please visit facebook for more information.)
We pray that the students, teachers and youth pastors who have participated in our summer program will not only take a break from the busy school year, but also make use of those reflections and learnings to refresh their lives and continue to move forward on their heavenly paths with God.
As August approaches, please pray for the quadrennial IFES World Assembly in Indonesia. May the participants enjoy the fellowship and benefit from the exchanges. August also marks the beginning of a new school year. May we be diligent to watch out for what the Lord has entrusted us with as we continue to face new challenges.
Your sister,
Maureen TANG
Associate General Secretary
